Common Core Curriculum
In 2012, North Carolina, along with many other states, adopted the Common Core Curriculum. The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.
Below are some links to the standards we will focus on while your child is in kindergarten as well as a description of how they will be graded.

Math
In math this year, we will use a spiraled system designed by WCPSS. Each time we begin a new unit, a letter will be sent home to parents explaining what we plan to teach and how. There are also videos demonstrating the method we teach in class embedded in these parent guides

Phonics
For phonics, we will use the Letterland series. Letterland is a phonics based approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling. Letterland is an imaginary place where characters are transformed from plain black letter shapes into kid-friendly pictograms. All the Letterlanders have stories that explain letters, sounds and shapes, as well as other phonics facts. Parents can click this link to hear the songs, action tricks, stories and learn more about Letterland. Below are an explanation of the Letterlanders and their "action tricks".

There are a few Letterland apps available for purchase on the Apple store website, should you wish to reinforce phonics at home.

Writing
For writing, we loosely base our instruction on "Writer's Workshop". Each time we write, we will have a short mini-lesson, followed by a short time for the children to write and finally, a chance to "confer" about what they wrote.
Here are some examples of typical kindergarten writing. Remember, level 1 is well below grade level, 2 is slightly below, 3 is on grade level, and 4 is above grade level.
